Sligo come crashing down..

Letterbreen-B 7, Sligo City 3.

For the second time in as many weeks, Sligo City returned to Lisbellaw Hall, this time to play Letterbreen B.
Sligo, still on a high from their first win came crashing down to earth, as the found it hard to contend with the speed of this exciting young team.
Sligo started off strongly once again, when Adrian Flynn & Wilfred Burke recorded 3-1 wins over Michael Bryant & Ashley Givan respectively. However, a below par Gary Hall could not contend with the speed and determination of Stephen Slater & lost 3-1.
In the second round of Games, Michael made up for his earlier loss, with a convincing 3-0 victory over Wilfred. Adrian pushed Stephen very close & was perhaps a little unlucky not to win this game, but Stephen held his nerve to win 3-2. Gary had a straight sets win over Ashley.
The 3rd round of games all went Letterbreen’s way, with Ashley & Stephen recording very close 3-2 wins over Adrian & Wilfred respectively & Michael had a comfortable 3-1 win over Gary.
Sligo hadn’t much joy in the double’s either as Michael/Ashley showed that youth is every bit as good as experience, by beating Adrian/Wilfred 3-1.
Final Score 7-3 in Letterbreen’s favor.

Sligo Debut with a narrow victory..

Lisbellew Team: Sligo Team:
1. Chris McDowell 1. Adrian Flynn
2. Adam Slater 2. Wilfred Burke
3. Brian Vetch 3. Gary Hall

Chris V Adrian:
13-11, 7-11, 6-11, 8-11
Chris never really got going, in this, his first competitive game in 3 months. This was Adrian’s first EVER game in the Fermangh League & he got of to the perfect start.

Adam V Wilfred:
10-12, 11-8, 13-11, 11-7
Man of the Match, Adam got off to a slow start, but came good with VERY effective serves and powerful looping. The unorthodox pen-hold grip of Wilfred was slightly unlucky to go 2-1 down in the 3rd, but a good win for Adam.

Brian V Gary:
7-11, 7-11, 3-11
The former Drum Player was on good form & unfortunately Brian could not get going at all. This combination, gave Gary a convincing Victory.

Chris V Wilfred:
11-7, 6-11, 11-6, 11-7
A very Attacking game from both players, with Chris getting the upper hand.

Adam V Gary:
7-11, 11-1, 11-9, 6-11, 11-8
An unusual game… After wining the 1st game, Gary went 10-0 down in the second & lost it 11-1. Gary was 6-1 down in the 3rd, but won the 4th. In the 5th, Gary was 5-1 down. Adam was quick to get going in each game & his looping was excellent. Gary kept himself in the game, by displaying some good attacking shots also.

Brian V Adrian:
11-6, 0-11, 4-11, 11-9, 2-11
Another strange game, with a huge variation in scores. Adrian is a VERY steady all round player & he needed to be to win this match.

Chris V Gary:
7-11, 2-11, 7-11
Chris was VERY temperamental & along with his lack of match practice, he found this game difficult. In the end, Gary had an easy 3-0 win. I have a feeling the return match will be a different story, when Chris has more games under his belt!!

Adam V Adrian:
7-11, 11-7, 4-11, 11-9, 11-9
High Quality game. Geoffrey was on hand to give Adam the coaching he needed to win this game. Wining all 3 matches, Adam was deservedly man of the match.

Brian V Wilfred:
11-5, 6-11, 5-11, 11-8, 8-11
Wilfred notched up his first point of the night, in this highly entertaining attacking game.

Chris/Adam V Adrian/Gary:
10-12, 11-9, 11-7, 9-11, 9-11
Chris/Adam were a strong doubles team, with one player severing & the other following up with some excellent attacking topspin. In the end though, Sligo’s “steady game” approach paid off & came back to steal the 5th game 11-9, after being 9-6 down.

Overall, as the final score suggested, this was a close match. It looked like heading for a 5-5 draw, until Sligo stole the doubles, but the newly promoted club (Lisbellaw won Div 3 last season) put up a tough fight.
